The word Geisha means “one who lives
as art”. Geisha date back to the 1600’s most likely
originating from ancient religious practices. Geisha make a conscious
and deliberate choice to make art their life. They are professionals
in music, dance, poetry, calligraphy and storytelling. It is probably
the only profession in Japan where women are consistently ranked
above men. Being a Geisha allows a woman to work into old age
because of the high cultural value placed on the preservation
of traditional art. The world of Geisha enables Japanese women
to be independent and self-sufficient. A common misconception
is they are somehow linked to prostitution. Geisha are truly a
symbol of feminine creative energy and artistic expression. It
is estimated that there are still 10,000 Geisha practicing their
art.
